El jengibre es una especia y planta medicinal procedente de Asia Central y el Sudeste Asiático. La raíz del jengibre se utiliza desde hace mucho tiempo como condimento y medicamento. 

El jengibre es fuente importante de minerales como el manganeso, hierro, magnesio, zinc, potasio, fósforo y calcio. Aporta también vitaminas como la vitamina C, B3, B6, B1, B2, B9 y vitamina E. El jengibre es un alimento antibacteriano y antioxidante, ya que contiene fitoquímicos como flavonoides, taninos, el gingerol y shogaol; compuestos que ayudan a retrasar el proceso de envejecimiento celular y a combatir los radicales libres. 

Entre los beneficios del jengibre destaca, 

  • Reduce problemas digestivos, como flatulencias, diarrea, náuseas y mareos. 
  • Tiene propiedades antiinflamatorias y analgésicas; reduce dolores en articulaciones. 
  • Controla el sobrepeso y ayuda a disminuir la grasa hepática y la inflamación que desencadena el hígado graso. 
  • Disminuye los niveles de colesterol y glucosa en sangre. 
  • Reduce problemas de circulación 
  • Reduce la inflamación de garganta, es analgésico y auxiliar en resfriados o gripe. 
  • Ayuda a retrasar la aparición de enfermedades neurodegenerativas como Alzheimer o Parkinson. 

Se recomienda no consumir jengibre en personas con cálculos biliares, mujeres embarazadas, personas que estén tomando medicación antiplaquetaria o coagulantes orales, personas con hemorroides, personas con problemas de presión arterial.
